According to preliminary data, the Northeast School District started classes Aug. 16 with the largest elementary enrollment in several years.
As a result , the school board has authorized the hiring of two new elementary teachers in order to make three sections of kindergarten (54) and first grade (51).
Total preliminary elementary enrollment (certified data will not be available until October) now stands at 386. Elementary enrollment for the last few years has averaged 364, the school board was told in July.
The district continues to attract open enrolled students from other areas, according to data from Tina Bartels, business manager.
The current open enrolled numbers are:
• Preston 30
• East Central 19 (all elementary). East Central students in grades 7 through 12 attend Northeast through a whole grade sharing (WGS) agreement.
• Clinton 136
• DeWitt 9
• Maquoketa 2
• Bellevue 2
Meanwhile, 12 Northeast students have open enrolled to other school districts.
The total number of students, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, who will be attending classes on the Northeast campus currently stands at 862.
