CLINTON – The Ashford pitching staff surrendered only seven hits and allowed no runs Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Lincoln Christian University in the first two contests of a five-game baseball homestand.
Freshman Collin Powers picked up his first career shutout, surrendering two hits in a 3-0 win in Game 1. In Game 2, senior Cory Cook earned his first win as a starter with six shutout innings in a 5-0 Ashford victory.
Nine Saints recorded at least one base hit, with senior John Caravia’s three leading all players. R.J. Roberts and Dylan Kester drove in two runs each for the Saints, who improved to 18-16 with the sweep.
Ashford (18-16) scored all of its runs in the fifth. Caravia opened the scoring with a two-out single to left, and two more runners scored on an error later in the inning to put the Saints up for good.
The Ashford bats got going right away in Game 2, scoring three times in AU’s first trip to the plate. After an RBI groundout from Jason German got the Saints on the board, Ashford added two more one batter later when Robert singled up the middle, bringing home Kevin Silva and Colton Christensen.
The Saints added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on Kester’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly from Jean Carlos Peralta.
Cook scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four in six scoreless innings. Brandon Hurst came on in the seventh and struck out the side.
Ashford is back in action today with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Trinity Christian at Ashford University Field.
