GALESBURG, Ill. — The Clinton Community College basketball team saw a lead slip away in the waning minutes as Carl Sandburg rallied for a 79-74 victory Saturday.

The Cougars led 43-41 at halftime and built their cushion to 10 with just over seven minutes to go.

“We played 32 minutes of pretty good basketball,” said Cougars’ coach Josh Davis, whose team is 0-1. “But then we had some key turnovers and they went on a big streak. They hit a bunch of 3-pointers — 13 in all — and we couldn’t overcome it.”

Nick Thompson led Clinton with 21 points, while Jake Gordon added 19.

Deonté Hines was also in double figures with 13 points and Scott Sturm tallied eight.

A complete box score from the game was not available.

Clinton plays its first home game Tuesday when Sauk Valley visits Yourd Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
