Junior Rubina Vidal and sophomore Nikki Erling picked up individual victories Thursday as the Clinton High girls swimming team opened the season with a 126-49 loss to Dubuque Senior at the Dubuque Hempstead pool.

Despite the loss, Clinton coach Albert Hayton liked what he saw from his swimmers.

“We had a great first meet,” he said. “It showed where we are and what we need to work on. We had a lot of girls that had not ever competed. This meet was good for them. Now they know what to expect next time.”

Vidal scored 120.95 points to claim first place in the diving competition. Erling’s victory came in the 100-yard breaststroke. She finished in 1 minute, 18.16 seconds, 5.8 seconds ahead of runner-up Taylor Morris of Senior.

Erling also claimed second place in the 200 individual medley and led off Clinton’s second-place entry in the 200 medley relay.

The River Queens had an even better showing in the junior varsity meet, falling 78-51. Maddie Baughman was a triple winner for Clinton. She finished first individually in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and joined Genevieve Ehlers, Corrina Herrmann and Irene Griffin in winning the 400 freestyle relay.

Clinton returns to the pool Tuesday with a dual meet at Tipton.
