Kate Kaster and Emmanuel Marcos-Teles punched their tickets to the state cross country meet with top-10 finishes Thursday at the Class 4A qualifying meet at Crow Creek Park.

Marcos-Teles qualified for the second year in a row by placing fifth in 16 minutes, 37 seconds.

“For now, I’m happy,” he said. “I’ll wait for next week. The state meet, that’s the most important.”

Clinton coach Wes Golden said, “Emmanuel had a great race against some big competition.”

Marcos-Teles said his goal was to place in the top 10 so he could advance and that’s what he did. Things didn’t start off great for the Clinton junior. He was in eighth place and battling a large group of runners around the one-mile mark.

“I felt good,” Marcos-Teles said. “Right there in the first mile, they were a bit fast. I kept the pace to the two-mile (mark). ... Then I sprinted the last 100 meters. It was pretty good, I think.”

Marcos-Teles moved up to fifth place during the second mile and passed Pleasant Valley’s Tony Meyer coming down a big hill near the end of the race to enter fourth place. Meyer was able to get back in front of the River King before the finish, however.

Mississippi Athletic Conference champion Matt Butler of Bettendorf won the race. Pleasant Valley won the team title, and Iowa City High and Burlington were the other advancing teams.

Golden said he was also especially pleased with Nathan Schroeder, who placed 44th.

“Nate Schroeder had a great race as he stepped it up for this big meet,” Golden said. “I look forward to next year's team as we return our top six boys. They now have a year under their belt running together.”

Coming off a MAC title, Kaster was a little disappointed with her fourth-place finish, but with it she qualifies for the state meet for the third straight year and may take some added motivation into next Saturday’s race in Fort Dodge.

“I have a little (extra) determination now for state,” she said.

Kaster finished in 14:41, behind Bettendorf’s Mahnee Watts, who won, and Anna Peer, and Pleasant Valley freshman Addie Royer.

“It was an OK race,” Kaster said. “It started off a little faster than I thought it was going to. I just had to hold on for the rest of it.”

Kaster stayed in fourth almost the entire race.

“She still had a fantastic time on a very difficult course,” Golden said.

Kaster said hard work had been the key for her success so far during her senior season.

“I always work hard at everything that I do,” Kaster said. “Those miles in the summer help a lot.”

The Spartans also captured the girls team title and will advance to state along with Iowa City High and Bettendorf.

For the River Queens, Meggie Buikema and Shelby Weets both set new personal records.

“It was great to see Meggie have such a wonderful finish to an awesome high school career,” Golden said.

The two state qualifiers for Clinton now have eight days to prepare for the state meet.

“We’ll probably taper. I’ll rest a lot, get some good night’s sleep. Eat some really good food,” Kaster said.

“I’m going to take it easy this week,” Marcos-Teles said. “I’ll do some sprints but not go too hard.”
