Clinton won two titles and placed second as a team Saturday at the Clinton Invitational girls tennis tournament.

The River Queens finished with 24 points, behind only Waterloo Columbus which scored 30 points. Columbus won its 14th team state championship last spring in Class 1A, and the top three singles players from that squad are back this season.

Clinton senior Meggie Buikema dropped only six games in three matches on her way to the title at No. 4 singles; four of the games she lost came against teammate Jordan Nelson. Nelson, who placed fourth at No. 4 singles, was one of the reasons the Clinton junior varsity placed sixth in the 10-team event.

Clinton’s other title came from two seniors. Jenny Vens and Megan Goetzl teamed to win the title at No. 2 doubles. The pair didn’t drop a game in the quarterfinals or semifinals.

Vens and Goetzl faced Anne Nora and Abby Greenwood of Columbus in the finals and prevailed 8-4. Greenwood was the only Sailor not to win a title on the day, as she lost to Buikema in the finals at No. 4 singles.

Nora won the title at No. 3 singles, topping Goetzl 8-4 in the finals. Of the nine championship matches, Columbus had a competitor in eight of them and won five. The River Queens had five finalists, which was the second most.

At No. 6 singles, Clinton and Clinton JV each advanced someone to the semifinals. Gabby Haan finished as the runner-up for the River Queens and Jenna Cullen grabbed fourth for the junior varsity.

The Clinton junior varsity went 7-6 in matches that were not against Clinton varsity players.

Clinton and Columbus were the only two teams to have someone place in the top four at each singles position and each doubles position.
