Indians repeat as champions in Class B

Devising for Drake

Zach James/Clinton HeraldCamanche’s Dylan Dodson attempts his third try at the 5-foot-9 level of the high jump during the Clinton Gateway Relays on Tuesday. Dodson won at 5-8.

CLINTON — Camanche walked away from Tuesday’s Gateway Classic Relays feeling good about taking the top-spot in its class for the second year in a row.

The Indians topped the Class B portion of the River Kings’ home meet with several other area teams following the Indians in the standings, including Northeast and Morrison taking spot Nos. 2 and 3.

Tuesday was — in a way — preparation for Iowa-based runners for this weekend’s Drake Relays. Camanche has two relays running in Des Moines on Friday: the 400-meter and 1,600 relays.

Thomas Brantley will be a part of the 400 relay team and will compete individually in the 110 hurdles. The Indians won the relay race in 45.38 seconds, while Brantley took the 110s in 14.73 seconds.

“I had an easy day compared to everyone else,” Brantley said. “I think tonight was to get handoffs down and prepare ourselves for this weekend. Just getting the technical things down, and just get the kinks out.”

Camanche will also compete in the 1,600 meter relay, and no matter who is competing for the Indians, the goal is universal — run aggressively and try to win.

“We want everything we can get,” said Indians senior Jeremiah Jones, who will be a part of the 1,600 relay. “I wanted it last year, and I think we can get it this year. I want something to take home. I want a medal.”

Jones ran his first long-distance race for the first time since the state cross country meet last fall and got caught by Morrison’s  Hunter Hamstra with 75 meters to win. Hamstra won in 4 minutes, 56 seconds.

Will Seeser could have joined his Indian teammates in the long jump at Drake had his winning leap of 22-feet-5 — a school record, and1 inch short of the Gateway Relays record — come before the qualifying deadline.

“Warming up in the four-by-8(00) and a little wind helped me out a lot,” Seeser said. “I got the school record by a foot ... this is my best jump by two feet. I feel good about it. I’m not too mad about not qualifying, I didn’t even jump last week.”

Seeser’s jump was the fourth longest in the state, tied with Urbandale senior Abdul Mansaray. Seeser also won the 200 dash in 23.29 seconds Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Clinton prepped for its three appearances for Friday, as it will be at Drake competing the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays.

“We haven’t had really hard practices, so this was a practice for us, and a good practice,” Marquis Robinson said. “All we have to do is have faith and run hard.”

Clinton finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 800 while holding out Barrion Collins, who is dealing with a leg injury. Jimmy Bell and Amani Larson took the place of Collins on Tuesday.

“We didn’t run as well as last Thursday,” Clinton Coach Tony Smith said. “I thought we might need a 3:28 last week, and that wouldn’t have made it. The four-by-4(00) and four-by-2(00) dropped so much time, and Amani Larson, who didn’t compete last year, stepped up. If we can just get Collins back in the lineup, we’ll be all right.”

Muscatine defended its Class A team title with 135 points.
