FULTON, Ill. — Nathan Parchert scored on a 35-yard run with 1 minute, 22 seconds remaining to cap a Rockridge comeback that handed Fulton its first loss of the season, 40-39, on Friday night.

The Rockets improved to 4-0, while the Steamers, ranked fourth in Class 1A, suffered their first loss in four games this fall.

The stunning loss came after Fulton built a 19-point first-half lead behind the spectacular performance by senior running back Austin Schroeder. He racked up almost 300 yards on the ground before halftime and delivered touchdown runs of 54, 76, 66 and 87 yards.

“That was a heck of a high school football game,” Fulton Coach Patrick Lower said on the KCLN radio postgame show. “We go in with a big lead at half, everything going our way. I don’t think our kids let up. They just made plays.”

Schroeder’s final touchdown, on a 35-yard screen pass from Bryce Grant, put the Steamers ahead 39-26 with 6:40 remaining.

But Rockridge came back and pulled within 39-33 on a 25-yard run by quarterback Riley Fetterer with 4:58 left. It was Fetterer's second touchdown run of the game, and he also threw a TD pass.

Fulton’s next series ended with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-3 from the Rockridge 29.

The Rockets then drove 71 yards to the winning score. Fetterer ripped off a key 32-yard gain to the Fulton 35, then Parchert scored his third touchdown on the next play.

The Steamers threatened again after Parchert’s touchdown, but Grant’s pass to Tyler Bruggenwirth was intercepted in the end zone to seal Rockridge’s win. Grant and Bruggenwirth had connected on a 67-yard scoring pass with 22.6 seconds left in the second quarter.

Fulton finished with a 414-348 advantage in rushing yards, a 131-42 edge in passing yards and a 545-390 advantage in total offense.
