CLINTON — Colin Nelson picked up Clinton’s lone victory in an 8-1 boys tennis dual loss to Pleasant Valley on Thursday at Max Lynn Courts.

Nelson, who moved up a spot to play No. 3 singles, defeated Vincent Gnad 6-2, 6-3.

“Colin Nelson is on a tear this season,” Clinton Coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “With his win tonight, he is undefeated in singles with wins against several quality opponents like PV tonight.”

The River Kings played without regular No. 2 singles player Sameer Ansari.

“Everybody saw some different looks tonight as they played up a spot with Ansari home sick and with a new doubles partner,” Mitchell said. “I was proud that the team fought rather than roll over because they were out of position.”

Mitchell didn’t take the loss as a setback.

“Anytime we can play a powerhouse like Pleasant Valley, we need to come out focused and view it as an opportunity to improve by playing tougher competition,” he said. “Tonight we came out with that attitude and took positive steps in the right direction.”

RIVERDALE — Pleasant Valley handed the Clinton girls a 9-0 loss Thursday.

“We knew PV would be tough,” Clinton Coach Cindy Rasche said. “They have six returning players, plus two freshmen who have jumped into the lineup.”

The Spartans are 8-0 this season and have lost just two matches all season.

Rasche singled out Justine Lange for her play at No. 2 singles. Pleasant Valley’s Katie Melbourne, who placed seventh in Class 2A state singles last season, defeated Lange 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 in the closest match of the day.

“Justine played outstanding,” Rasche said. “Mentally, she just has to believe she’s ready for the big time.”
