MUSCATINE — Clinton won a pair of super tiebreakers on its way to a 6-3 victory against Muscatine in boys tennis Thursday.
“Tonight was a good win for the program,” Clinton Coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “I know a lot of the guys remembered the pain from losing close matches to these guys last year.”
This time, the River Kings won most of the close ones.
“A lot of grit and character was shown tonight,” Mitchell said.
Colin Nelson won a 10-3 super tiebreaker at No. 4 singles after splitting two sets with Sam Garvin, and Sameer Ansari and Connor Nolan rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set of No. 1 doubles and won the second set 7-5 and the super tiebreaker 10-7. Ansari also had a long singles match, beating Ben Morgan 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2.
“Ansari won an epic two-hour singles match that really lifted the team’s spirits going into doubles,” Mitchell said. “Going into doubles play up 4-2 is a lot more comfortable than going in tied 3-3.”
Clinton also got singles wins from Nelson (No. 3) and Garrett Stumbaugh (No. 6), and Nelson and Rohan Aggarwal combined to win No. 2 doubles.
“Aggarwal and Nelson have been playing great doubles together the whole year and were able to secure the fifth win quickly to take pressure off the other guys,” Mitchell said. “However, Ansari and Nolan were in a battle after losing the first set. They could’ve coasted to the end after we secured the meet, but I was so proud the way they battled back and forced a super tiebreaker, which they won 10-7.”

The closest match for the Indians came at No. 1 doubles, where the Spartans’ Katie Melbourne and Allison Miller beat Maddie Parker and Lea Lefebure 10-4.
