Herald Staff Report
PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown managed just four hits off Fulton pitcher Jack Lemke on Monday, but the Panthers’ timing of them was impeccable, leading to a 3-1 win in Three Rivers Conference baseball.
Kallen Jepson had two of the Panthers’ hits, and both were RBI singles. Nathan Pierceson drove in the other run. The win avenged an earlier 1-0 loss at Fulton.
Lemke went the distance for the Steamers, throwing 66 of his 106 pitches for strikes. He walked two and struck out 11.
The Panthers got to Lemke in the third inning after he struck out the first two batters before the EP lineup rolled over to the top of the order. Kale Orman was hit by a pitch, Grady Todd walked and Jepson followed with the Panthers’ first hit. He fouled off a 1-2 pitch, then singled to right field, scoring Orman and sending Todd to second. Pierceson followed with his run-scoring single to left field.
Fulton pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fourth, also rallying with two outs. Colin Houzenga doubled and scored on Jason Ryder’s single. After Cole McClary was hit by a pitch, Ryder stole third base, but Devin Bly flew out to end the threat.
Erie/Prophetstown added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Orman reached on a one-out error, advanced to second and third on a pair of passed balls, then scored on Jepson’s two-out single to left field.
Brandon Howell pitched the first six innings for the Panthers to earn the win. He allowed eight hits but didn’t issue a walk, and he struck out four.
Howell exited after allowing a leadoff single to Bly in the top of the seventh. Seth Sanderson greeted reliever Josh Lohman with a single, but Bly was thrown out trying for third. Lohman struck out Trey Simmons, but Devon Ballard kept the hopes alive with a single before Lemke grounded out to end the game.
Mustangs top Tigers
MORRISON, Ill. — Morrison got the better end of an early offensive explosion Monday as it defeated Sherrard 10-5 in Three Rivers Conference baseball.
The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Morrison came back with five in the bottom half of the frame and added four more in the second innings.
Justin Jensen and Mason Sitzmore each drove in three runs for the Mustangs.
Trailing 3-0, the Mustangs loaded the bases in the bottom of the first when Andy Bird and Ryan VanZuiden singled on each side of an Ethan Fischbach walk. Jensen followed with a two-run single, then VanZuiden scored when Sitzmore reached on an error. Jensen scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball, and Sitzmore came in on a groundout.
Sherrard narrowed the deficit to 5-4 with an unearned run in the top of the second inning. Blake Lampo reached on a two-out error and scored on Nathan Kelly’s triple.
The Mustangs took advantage of Grant Morse’s wildness in the bottom half of the inning. He issued one-out walks to Bird, Fischbach, VanZuiden and Jensen before being replaced on the mound by Lampo. Sitzmore followed with a sacrifice fly that moved each runner up a base. After Ben Tegeler reached on an error to load the bases, Joey Brackemyer and Brock Smith walked to force in runs.
Sitzmore drove in the final run when he hit another sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Brackemyer earned the win with four innings of three-hit ball. He struggled with his control, though, walking as many batters (6) as he struck out.
Brackemyer’s wildness hurt him in the first inning when he walked the first four batters, the free pass to Morse forcing in a run. The second run scored on a passed ball, the third on a wild pitch.
