DAVENPORT — Clinton might be young, but the River Queens still have high hopes for the girls tennis season.

Led by their two returning varsity players, the River Queens opened the season with an 8-1 win against Davenport West on Tuesday.

“I’m looking forward to see how we do,” Clinton Coach Cindy Rasche said. “We’ve set our goal that we’re going to finish one or two in the MAC (Mississippi Athletic Conference), and, depending on which way they send us, our goal is to send some to state. The girls can achieve it if they believe and buckle down.”

Samantha Brisch and Riley Hubbart, the two players back from last year’s squad that placed second in the state, won their singles matches and teamed to win 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

“Brisch stepped up at the end of doubles and pulled out some nice shots,” Rasche said. “It’s good to see her take a leadership role.”
