CLINTON — Clinton never lost more than one game in a match as it defeated Davenport Central 9-0 on Tuesday in girls tennis at Max Lynn Courts.
Samantha Brisch (No. 1), Elley Housenga (No. 4) and Malika Usmanova (No. 6) all won their singles matches by 8-0 scores, as did Avan Colah at No. 7. The other three River Queens singles players (Justine Lange, Riley Hubbart and Kiersten Housenga) won by 8-1 scores.
Usmanova and Kaitlynn Green scored a shutout at No. 3 doubles.
“The girls have improved by leaps and bounds,” Clinton Coach Cindy Rasche said. “They’re starting to hit with a lot more pace. They’re being aggressive at the net in doubles.”
River Kings fall
DAVENPORT — Colin Nelson picked up Clinton’s lone win in an 8-1 boys tennis loss to Davenport Central on Tuesday.
Nelson pulled out a super tiebreaker victory against Mike Helmich at No. 4 singles. Nelson won the first set 6-4, but Helmich came back to win the second in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). Nelson prevailed 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
Helmich turned the tables on the Kings in doubles as he and Josh Janes won 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 against Clinton’s Sameer Ansari and Connor Nolan.
“As a whole, the team got away from the fundamentals of tennis tonight,” Clinton Coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “A good team like Davenport Central will exploit that all night long.
“I hope the guys use tonight as a motivating learning experience because Davenport Central is not going anywhere as we face them in three upcoming tournaments, including district play.”
