AMBOY, Ill. — Fulton broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning and defeated Amboy 8-3 on Tuesday in Three Rivers Conference baseball.
“It was a nice win as we hit the ball really well against a quality lefty,” Fulton Coach Kyle Miller said. “Mike (Dixon, Fulton’s starting pitcher) really battled for us and did a great job.”
The Steamers’ big inning came after Amboy left-hander Logan Thake struck out the first two batters in the fourth.
Cole McClary’s triple to right field got things started, and he scored to break a 1-1 tie when Erik North, the No. 9 batter, singled to left field. Seth Sanderson added another single, and North came around on error.
A single by Trey Simmons put runners on the corners, and Devon Ballard followed with a two-run double. Ballard scored on Jack Lemke’s single, and Lemke scored the sixth run of the inning when Jake VanZuiden and Colin Houzenga followed with singles.
McClary knocked in Fulton’s first run with a two-out double in the second that scored VanZuiden, who led off with a double. Lemke added a run-scoring single in the sixth, also with two outs.
“Cole’s hits were both huge as they really ignited us,” Miller said. “It’s always nice to pick up a road win.”
Dixon earned the win with five innings on the mound. He gave up one earned run while striking out eight batters.
