THOMSON, Ill. — West Carroll scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and defeated Eastland 12-2 in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference softball Monday.

Eastland led 1-0 after a half inning, and Cougars pitcher Bubby Doubler struck out Brianna Kampmeier to open the bottom half of the first. But, the next 11 batters reached base and the Thunder (9-10, 4-4 NUIC) broke it open.

Abby Maike started the rally with her first of two singles in the inning, and Anna Badtke followed with the first of her two walks in the frame. Monica Smith tied the score with an RBI double. Haley Appel and Emma Aljets followed with walks as West Carroll took the lead.

The Thunder added single runs on a fielder’s choice by Rachel Dykstra, a single by Riley Sullivan, a fielder’s choice by Christy Ralston and an error. Smith drove in the final run of the inning with a fielder’s choice.

West Carroll added its final three runs in the third when Smith hit an RBI double and Aljets hit a two-run triple.
