CLINTON – Ashford put the finishing touches on its home baseball schedule Tuesday afternoon splitting a windy, offensively charged pair of games against Benedictine University at Springfield. Benedictine won the opener 13-5, but Saints took the second game 9-8.
Senior Tanner Courtney took advantage of the wind blowing out, belting a second-inning grand slam in Game 2, his first home run of the year and second of his career. Junior Jean Carlos Peralta connected for his first career home run and finished with a team-leading five hits on the day.
Peralta’s home run, a two-run shot to left field, snapped a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning in Game 2. Colton Christensen added to the lead four batters later with an RBI single.
In the first game, the Bulldogs (16-22) opened up a 6-1 lead.
Ashford (21-18) battled back to get within a run. Back-to-back doubles from Courtney and Peralta to lead off the third cut the gap to 6-2. The Saints got within 6-5 in the fourth on a Riki Vasquez RBI double, a Peralta run-scoring single and a wild pitch.
But the Bulldogs scored seven consecutive runs to squash the Ashford comeback and put the game out of reach.
Kevin Delzell dropped to 6-6 after allowing six earned runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings.
