CLINTON — Even though the rain came midway through Clinton’s home game against Beloit on Sunday, Clinton Manager Scott Steinmann thought it was a beautiful day — because the LumberKings won 9-4.

Clinton (5-6) beat the Snappers for the third time in the past two weekends after Beloit won the series opener Saturday. The finale is at 6:30 tonight and will include a food drive sponsored by the Herald.

The big inning was the eighth for the LumberKings.

Third baseman Joe DeCarlo picked up his team-high seventh RBI on a single to right field that brought in Gianfranco Wawoe. DeCarlo later scored on a bases-loaded walk.

“I like the full production from the lineup,” Steinmann said. “Everybody, I think, contributed in some way even if they didn’t get a hit. Everyone had professional at-bats.”

Much like the season home-opener against the Snappers a little more than a week ago, it didn’t take long for the bats to come alive during Clinton’s first inning. Chantz Mack led with his first triple since opening the season schedule the same way.

Chris Mariscal added a two-run single that scored Gianfranco Wawoe and Alex Jackson after Wawoe brought in Mack on an RBI double.

“That was a product of a two-strike hit,” Steinmann said. “We’ve done a good job; the guys are getting more comfortable within their at-bat, and getting hits with two strikes is an important thing for us as an organization and for them individually.

“We got right back after they scored one (in the first), and that got momentum back on our side,” Steinmann said.

In the third inning, Kristian Brito singled on a line drive to left fielder Joe Bennie that scored DeCarlo and Estarlyn Morales. Brito’s season-RBI total jumped to five.

“Kristian has done a great job the last couple days of being more selective at the plate,” Steinmann said.

Ryan Horstman picked up the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up just one hit while striking out three Snappers.

Jeffeson Medina picked up the no-decision on 4 1/3 innings in which the Venezuelan pitcher allowed one run on three hits in the first inning. He also struck out four and walked four.

“I think we gave up too many walks in non-situations,” Steinmann said. “We wanted them to be more aggressive. They battled through it, though.”

Clinton lost 6-5 on Saturday even though the LumberKings scored in each of the first three stanzas. Clinton was just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

“I thought we let that one get away,” Steinmann said. “I don’t think they really beat us, per se. I think we gave them a lot of free bases, and they took advantage of it.”

Fans can receive a free general admission ticket to tonight’s game by bringing two cans or boxes of non-perishable food. Collection starts at 5 p.m. and will be collected until the end of the third inning.
