Prep wrestling: Sabers win own invitational

Fleetwood caps big day for Steamers

Fulton senior Taylor Fleetwood won a 5-0 decision to cap a strong day for the Fulton wrestling team at the Illinois High School state wrestling tournament.

Fleetwood defeated Keivion Whaley to move on to the quarterfinals at 285. Fleetwood and Whaley battled to a 0-0 tie in the first period, and Fleetwood took advantage in the second period, with an escape and a takedown.

Fleetwood added another takedown in the third period for the win.  

Fleetwood, ranked fifth, will now face Anthony Enlow, of Vandalia, who is ranked third in Class 1A.

Pannell edges Vargas in first round

Fulton's 195-pounder No. 10 Eli Pannell pulled off a minor upset during the first round against No. 9 Victor Vargas, of Elmhurst, 10-6.

Pannell notched several takedowns in the match, opening up a 6-1 lead midway through the second period. Vargas was able to cut the deficit to 7-5 in the third period, but Pannell was able to escape, and notch another takedown to give him the decision. 

Pannell now moves on to the quarterfinal round on Friday against Will Heikes, of Petersburg. Heikes, ranked eighth, defeated Jeremy Opp 4-0 in the first round.

Fleetwood begins pursuit for 3rd title

Fulton senior No. 3 Tyler Fleetwood's campaign for a third straight Illinois state wrestling title began with a 9-0 win against Heyworth junior Andrew Sims, ranked sixth in Class 1A at 132 pounds. 

The action started off slow, with a 0-0 tie in the first period. Fleetwood immediately escaped in the second period, to start off the scoring at 1-0. 

Neither wrestler could record a takedown in the second period, giving way to Fleetwood starting on top in the third period. From the top position, Fleetwood was able tally more points late in the third period, giving him the major decision.

Fleetwood now squares off against Fithian (Oakwood) Ren Dazey, who pinned Kevin Rodriguez in the first round. Dazey is ranked fourth in Class 1A.
