CLINTON — The schedule gets even tougher for the Clinton High football team this week.
Coming off a 56-13 loss to North Scott last Friday, the River Kings (1-1) travel to Cedar Rapids Prairie tonight to take on the fifth-ranked Hawks in another non-district football game.
Prairie opened the season with a one-point win, 21-20, against Cedar Rapids Washington and then shut out Cedar Rapids Jefferson 28-0 last week.
A year ago, Prairie edged Clinton 46-42 in a wild game at Coan Field.
The Hawks have utilized a strong running attack this season.
Keegan Simmons has rushed 50 times for 302 yards in two games, but Levi Usher (15 carries-140 yards) and Braxton Zimmerman (21-112) have provided great support.
The River Kings had trouble stopping the run last week. North Scott finished with almost 400 yards on the ground.
Prairie quarterback Dalton Rayner has passed just 16 times in two games, completing five for 50 yards, although two have gone for touchdowns.
Clinton’s running game has totaled 238 yards in two games. The Hawks allowed just 25 rushing yards to Jefferson last week.
The River Kings have found some success through the air. Jacob DeMotta has completed 11 of 19 passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns. Brennan Lemke, who played sparingly last week after getting hurt in the season-opening win against Davenport West, is 8-of-13 for 116 yards and two TDs.
