GENEVA, Ill. — Clinton closed its first road trip of the Midwest League baseball season with a 3-2 win over Kane County on Friday.

“After a bad start to road trip (three consecutive losses to Quad Cities and one to Kane County) it’s good to end it on a series win,” Clinton Manager Scott Steinmann said. “I saw a lot of good things.”

One good thing he saw was how the LumberKings got out of a tight eighth-inning jam.

With Clinton leading 3-0, Clinton’s Jarrett Brown and Kody Kerski loaded the bases on walks. Kane County’s Victor Reyes hit a ground ball to right field that scored two runs, both charged to Brown. Reyes tried to advance to second base on the play, but LumberKings shortstop Chris Mariscal read the play well enough to cut off right fielder Estarlyn Morales’ throw toward third base.

That got Reyes in a rundown between Mariscal and first baseman Kristian Brito, and Reyes did not survive.

“He got the runner that was being aggressive,” Steinmann said. “If we don’t get that, I don’t think we get out of the inning.”

Kerski then forced a groundout on Stryker Trahan for the third out.

“He’s not satisfied to get guys on,” Steinmann said of Kerski. “ I don’t think he needed that to gain confidence. He believes he can get anyone out in this league.”

Joe DeCarlo hit his fourth home run of the early season in the sixth inning.

He started hitting the ball in Quad-Cities, and now some things are falling,” Steinmann said.

The LumberKings return home for a second consecutive weekend battle against Beloit, starting at 2 p.m. today

“It’s nice to be back home for a couple days,” Steinmann said. “We kind of know them a little bit; we just have to go out and execute.”
