DES MOINES — A handful of area players have been honored by the Iowa Newspaper Association with all-state baseball recognition.

Northeast’s Shawn Johnston was a first-team selection in Class 2A, while Clinton’s Ryan Clausen was a second-teamer in 4A.

Calamus-Wheatland had two all-state picks, as Kirby Rock was a Class 1A first-teamer and Ryan Powers a third-teamer.

Rou-nding out the area selections was Belle-vue Marquette’s Ryan Engelman, also a third-teamer in 1A.

Johnston, a senior, was named as a 2A first-team outfielder after hitting .423 for the season.

Clausen, a senior who hit .456, was named a 4A second-team utility player.

Rock, a senior first baseman, hit .553 this season and Powers, a freshman infielder, was a .564 hitter.

Engelman, a senior outfielder, hit .485 for the Mohawks.

Captains in each class were Urbandale’s Jared Norris (Class 4A), Marion’s Kevin Schuver (3A), Cherokee’s Cory Ege (2A) and Lansing Kee’s Andy Beck (1A).
