BURLINGTON — Just as the Major League Home Run Derby was taking place, the Burlington Bees put on a similar long ball display against the Clinton LumberKings.

The Bees belted three homers Monday night as they edged Clinton 9-7 in Midwest League play.

Brady Everett, Jeffrey Howell and Jesus DeSoto all had round-trippers for the winners.

Mauro Gomez had a homer for Clinton, his eighth of the season.

Clinton opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Marcus Lemon walked, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Jose Vallejo’s sacrifice fly to left.

Craig Gentry later singled, stole second and third and scored on an error.

The Bees answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first, all coming on Everett’s three-run homer.

Clinton tied the game in the third as Vallejo singled to left, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on John Whittleman’s double to right.

The Bees came back in the bottom of the frame with three home runs, two coming on Howell’s homer, to make it 6-3.

Clinton got a run back in the fourth as K.C. Herren singled to center, moved to third on a single to left by Gomez and scored on Lemon’s sacrifice fly.

After Burlington scored once in the fifth, the LumberKings tallied two runs in the sixth to make it 7-6.

With one out, Jay Heafner singled to left and went to third on a double to left by Hunter Harrigan. Both runners scored on Lemon’s single to center field.

Burlington tallied a run in the seventh, only to see Clinton score in the eighth on a solo homer to left-center by Gomez.

The Bees added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.

Josh Cribb (2-7) got the win and Aaron Hartsock earned his third save. Kasey Kiker (3-3) suffered the loss.

After an off day today, Clinton will host the Swing of the Quad Cities in a rare morning game Wednesday. The contest at Alliant Energy Field starts at 10 a.m.
