DES MOINES — Bellevue Marquette took its first step toward its goal of winning the Class 1A boys state basketball title Monday afternoon.

The unbeaten Mohawks (26-0) used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Alta for a 62-48 win in first-round action at Wells Fargo Arena.

Marquette, ranked second in the state, led 40-37 after three quarters before going on a 22-11 run in the final eight minutes.

Seven-foot all-stater Jordan Eglseder lit it up for the Mohawks, tallying game-highs of 31 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.

Alta (21-4) actually dominated early, breaking out to a 10-5 lead midway through the first period.

But the Mohawks came back with a six-point run, as baskets by Eglseder, Matt Kilburg and T.J. Bishop made it 11-10.

Alta’s Cody Nesbitt followed with a basket to make it 12-11 at the end of the first frame.

The teams played on even terms much of the second period, with Alta holding a 24-23 lead after Brad Payne’s basket with 2 minutes, 24 seconds left.

Marquette answered with a 3-pointer by Kilburg and jumper by Eglseder to lead 28-24 at halftime.

The Mohawks pushed their lead to as many as eight in the third period, but Alta rallied to come within 38-37 on Payne’s 3-pointer with 1:03 left.

Eglseder followed with a tip-in to put the Mohawks up by three entering the final stanza.

Leading by just two early in the fourth quarter, Marquette opened up the game with an 8-2 run to make it 49-41 with 3:04 left.

Bishop began the spurt with a jumper, while Eglseder added two baskets and Kilburg another.

Alta never got closer than five the rest of the way.

Besides Eglseder, Kilburg was also in double figures for Marquette with 16 points.

Payne paced unranked Alta with 22 points.

The Mohawks will take on another unranked team, Northwood-Kensett, in the semifinal round at 12:15 p.m. Thursday.

Northwood-Kensett upset top-rated North Mahaska 76-74 on Monday.
