JOHNSTON — The Camanche girls tennis team proved itself as one of the best in Iowa by placing second in the Class 1A portion of the state team tournament Saturday at Johnston High School.

The Indians defeated Red Oak in the morning semifinal by a 7-2 score.

Doubles play was the key for the Indians, as they swept all three matches with victories by the teams of Chelsea Moore-Emileigh Steines, Ashtyn Dixon-Lindsey Nissen and Emily Zimmon-Katy Svenson.

The Indians also had four singles winners — Moore, Dixon, Steines and Nissen.

In the title match, Waterloo Columbus posted a 5-1 victory over the Indians.

Doubles play was not contested since the Sailors clinched the championship in singles play.

Camanche’s winner was Moore, who posted a two-set victory over Michelle Schupbach in a battle of state champs.

Moore claimed the 1A singles crown on Friday, while Schupbach was part of the 1A doubles championship team.

“We played some very good tennis all day long,” said Camanche coach Erin Montgomery. “The girls went into the first match against Red Oak with a lot of confidence and played well, just like they did against Columbus. Columbus is such a strong team — you have to give them credit. But our girls weren’t intimidated and battled hard.”

Montgomery said the runner-up finish capped a fine season.

“One of our goals was to go through the regular season undefeated, and we accomplished that,” she said. “Another goal was to make it to state and win it. Even though we got second, it was still an impressive season on the part of our girls.”
