Herald Staff Report

PRESTON — Codie Adams of Camanche won the boys race and Northeast/East Central freshman Emily Franks took first place on the girls side Thursday at the North-east/East Central Invita-tional cross country meet at Plum River Golf Course.

Adams won by almost a minute, reaching the finish line in 18 minutes, 15 seconds. Jeremiah Gerardy was second in 19:08 and led Maquoketa to the boys team title with 52 points.

“Codie has established himself as the top runner (in the area),” Prince of Peace coach Dave Lawrence said.

Northeast’s Seth Mommsen took third, Trevor Kabala of Maquoketa was fourth and Cody Heim of Bellevue placed fifth. Connor Soenksen of Northeast, Zach Henningsen of Preston, Eric SIkkema of Prince of Peace, Rob Timmer of Marquette and Kevin Carrington of Camanche rounded out the top 10.

Bellevue Marquette used its strong pack to beat Prince of Peace 37-56 for the girls title, even though the Irish had two of the top four finishers. Franks won in 16:33, followed by defending state runner-up Audrey Griffin of Prince of Peace in 16:56. Marquette’s Sarah Lampe was third, and Katie Isenhour of Prince of Peace took fourth.

“Audrey has got to step up,” Lawrence said. “Katie is doing well (after being injured last season), and Chrissy (Kokjohn, who placed ninth) had our best run today to break up Marquette’s pack. When we can get our fifth and sixth runners up there, it’s going to help us out.”

Katherine Herrig of Marquette was fifth, followed in the top 10 by Lorena Temple of Camanche, Andrew’s Anne Bruno, Anna Lampe of Marquette, Kokjohn and Andrea Frank of Marquette.
