ELDRIDGE — For the second time in a row, Clinton barely was edged out of a first-place finish, but this time the team score wasn’t as important as the River Kings qualified for the boys track state meet in 12 events at the Class 4A North Scott District meet Saturday.

The coed meet, in which the Clinton girls placed fifth, was delayed one day after Friday’s bad weather forced the original postponement.

Bettendorf won the boys title by 31⁄2 points (142-138.5) over Clinton. Pleasant Valley, which beat Clinton by an even closer margin a week ago at the Mississippi Athletic Conference meet, finished third.

“What you’re looking for at this meet is to get guys through (to state),” Clinton coach Tony Smith said. “For the guys who have a shot to place at state, you want to make sure you get them.”

For the most part, that happened, Smith said.

“At districts, people have to step up, and you’ve got to be ready to go. The seniors seem to respond.”

Clinton won six events, with senior standout Ethan Holmes leading the way.

Holmes won both hurdle events and also anchored wins by the 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams. Holmes opted to run in two relays instead of an individual event such as the 400 meters, which he won at the MAC race.

“I kind of asked him what he wanted to do,” Smith said. “I think he could score in the open 400, but he thinks maybe we can win the four-by-2(00).”

The River Kings also got victories in both throwing events, although their winner was their only qualifier in each of the events in which they had a 2-3 finish at conference. Matt Murphy won the discus, and Jaryd Prince won the shot put.

The top four qualifiers in each event advanced.

The Clinton girls, meanwhile, qualified individuals in 10 events.

The highlight was a 2-3 finish by Sarah Wenzel and Mareike Kirchenberger in the long jump. Wenzel broke her personal record by 21⁄4 inches, sailing 18 feet, 4 inches, but defending state champion Alexis Mitchell of Davenport Central won at 18-5.75. Kirchenberger had a personal record of 17-3.5.

Clinton also got second-place finishes from Ashley Haugen in the 800, Kate Kaster in the 3,000 and its shuttle hurdle and 3,200 relay units. The River Queens also placed third in the 400 and 800 relays, and Taylor Rippon took third in the discus.

The state meet runs Thursday-Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
