CLINTON — Marcus Harris admitted he was uneasy, wondering how local recruiting would be affected after Clinton Community College had to suspend its men’s basketball season midway through the season because of a lack of numbers.

“That was the one concern we had when we ended our season was how it would affect our recruiting,” Harris said. “One of the things we tried to put out in the public was we were not ending the program, we just had to end the season.”

If the first recruits are any indications, his worries might be over.

Harris signed his first two players of the 2009 recruiting class Tuesday, and they’re two of the best players from the area.

“I’m glad to have interest from two of the better kids from around the area,” Harris said.

Preston’s Brady Oldag and Derrick Trenkamp, both Herald All-Area players, signed to join Harris’ program.

“I’m really excited,” Harris said Tuesday. “We kind of started late putting our name out there and were late letting them know we were interested. To be honest, I didn’t think we had a chance to get them. Once I got wind they might be interested, I jumped all over them.”

For good reason. Both bring size and scoring punch to the Cougars.

Oldag, a third-team all-state player and first-team all-area player, averaged a team-high 15.3 points a game last season. Trenkamp averaged 14.2.

Trenkamp averaged 7.3 rebounds per game, while Oldag haued in 6.8.

“I’m really excited about the size,” Harris said. “At that level, you’re not sure about exact heights of kids. I was happy to meet with both and find both were a legitimate 6-foot-6.

“Oldag is more the inside player, Trenkamp more the outside player. It’s kind of funny because Trenkamp is the bigger of the two. Oldag is good at using both hands around the basket.

“Both of them have tremendous upsides, and both definitely are going to help us next year.”

Harris also expects to sign one more area player this week.

Harris still is looking for more recruits. He expects to have three players back from this year’s team.
