DAVENPORT — Clinton bounced back from an opening-game loss to beat Davenport North and earn a Mississippi Athletic Conference baseball split Thursday.

North won the opener 10-9 in eight innings, while the River Kings posted a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the second game, Clinton shot out to a 4-0 lead with solo runs in the second and fifth innings and two more in the sixth.

North scored all its runs in the sixth.

Jordan Camp had three singles to lead Clinton, while Drew Matzen added two singles.

Curtis Howard was the winning pitcher and Ryan Hovey came in to pick up the save.

“Thank goodness for Jordan Camp, Drew Matzen and Jake Mangler in the second game, because nobody else did much offensively for us,” said Clinton coach Trent Snowden. “Curtis Howard did an excellent job pitching and Ryan Hovey came in to get the final out.

“Our defense was much better and we scored enough runs to win,” he added. “This is a big win because not only did we need it, but we lost a chance to possibly at least tie for the conference title after the first game. It would have been easy to think the second game was meaningless, but our kids battled and didn’t let the first game affect them.”

In the first game, North benefited from a six-run first inning before the River Kings rallied.

Camp had a triple and double, while Mangler added two doubles.

Shawn Winoski and Scott DeAngelis each came up with three singles.

“We dug ourselves in a giant hole,” said Snowden. “North hit the ball fine, but we should have been out of the inning allowing them only one run. Instead, with our efforts, we gave them six runs.

“We battled back all night,” he added. “But just when you thought we might catch them, we either took a third strike with runners in scoring position or didn’t make another big defensive play that should have been made.”

Clinton is now 10-6 in the MAC and 21-10 overall, while North is 6-10 and 9-18.

The River Kings host Davenport West in a makeup doubleheader Monday. Game time at Alliant Energy Field is 5 p.m.
