Paolo Marilim made back-to-back birdies, shot an 84 and led Clinton to a seventh-place finish Monday at the Davenport Assumption Invitational boys golf tournament at Emeis Golf Course.

“Overall we continued to show some bright spots and improvement in our games,” Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said.

Ryan Rursch followed with an 86, while teammates Tony Hurlburt (89) and Justin Tomona (91) rounded out the scores in Clinton’s round of 350.

“Tony Hurlburt had his lowest career score, so I was happy for him,” Niedermeyer said. “He is showing some improvement in his game.”

Davenport Central also shot 350 but had the tiebreaker advantage (fifth-best score on the team).

Marshal Lamb of Pleasant Valley was the medalist with a 1-over-par 75, and he led the Spartans to the team title in a tight, three-team race. Pleasant Valley finished with a 310 total, two strokes ahead of Bettendorf with North Scott another stroke back.

Marilim birdied the 126-yard, par-3 second hole and followed up with another birdie on the 400-yard, par-5 third hole.

“I thought Paolo had a pretty consistent day overall,” Niedermeyer said.

He also had seven pars but was hurt by double bogeys on Nos. 1, 9, 10 and 18.

Rursch also birdie No. 3 for Clinton and added nine pars. His downfalls were a triple bogey on No. 8 and a quadruple bogey on No. 18.

“Right now, we are still simply making too many big mistakes during our rounds,” Niedermeyer said. “With the exception of Paolo, the other five players had at least one other — a score higher than a double bogey — on their scorecard. We had 13 total as a team. It is really tough to rebound and shoot good scores when you are making a couple of big numbers like that. We just need to be more consistent during our rounds and we will keep improving.”

Tomona birdied the par-3, 110-yard No. 5 hole, while Koby Cleary had Clinton’s final birdie, on the 422-yard, par-5 18th hole.

Thunder takes 2nd

HANOVER, Ill. — Matt Ritchie and Sean Keckler each shot 49s to lead West Carroll on Monday as the Thunder claimed runner-up honors at a triangular meet hosted by River Ridge at Storybrook Golf Course.

Ritchie made three pars as West Carroll finished with a 210 team total. Eastland won the meet with a 168, and River Ridge was third with a 256.

Cameron Ehlers had a pair of pars and shot a 51 for the Thunder, while Mike Strauch and Paawan Dandona each shot a 61.
