WALNUT, Calif. — Jordan Cornilsen, a state track and field champion at Preston-East Central, now has a national title to his credit.

Cornilsen, a senior-to-be who won the Class 1A 400-meter dash last year, was part of the Iowa United Track Club 4x800-meter relay team that won the USATF (USA Track and Field) National Junior Olympic title recently.

He teamed up with Blake Irwin of Pleasant Valley, Tyler Anderson of North Iowa and Aaron Stockstell of Mid-Prairie to run the race in 7 minutes, 40.5 seconds. They beat the runner-up team by nearly 3 seconds.

Cornilsen, primarily a sprinter, turned in a split of 1:56.

“I think for four Iowa boys to go out to California and win that race is pretty exciting,” said Cornilsen. “Plus some of those guys we went against train year-round for track.”

Cornilsen figured he could get in the 1:50 range for a split.

“When we went to our regional meet in Minnesota I went 2:00 and felt fine, so I figured I could shave off some time,” he said.

Cornilsen also was part of a 4x400 team that finished eighth in 3:16.94. Rounding out the squad were Anderson, Brandon McSkimming of West Des Moines Valley and Stockstell.
