CHARLESTON, Ill. — A pair of Fulton athletes came close but just missed advancing to the finals of the Illinois Class 1A girls track and field state meet Thursday at Eastern Illinois University.

Junior Allison DeWeerdt finished third in her heat of the 100-meter hurdles and had the second-fastest non-qualifying time for the finals. She finished in 16.32 seconds, .18 slower than the last of the nine qualifiers for the finals.

Sophomore Elaina Raab was third in her flight of the shot put, throwing it 35 feet, 1/2 inch. That was the 21st-best throw, but only the top 12 advance to the finals. She needed to go 36-4 to move on.

Erie/Prophetstown had a close call in the 1,600 relay, taking third in its heat and recording the fifth-fastest non-qualifying time for the final. Barbara Duffy, Ellie Francis, Tess Burns and Stephanie Patton ran the race in 4:10.61.

Also for the Panthers, Ashley Voeltz was second in her flight with a heave of 34-8 in the shot put, Katelyn Blasdell went 105-3 in the discus and Katelyn Garrison went 8-6 in the pole vault.

Milledgeville/Eastland came the closest to making the finals. Its 1,600-meter relay unit of Brittny Olson, Katie Hutchison, Kaitlyn Bissell and August Cassens ran the fastest time that didn’t advance to the finals. They finished in 4:09.18.

Olson also was fifth in her heat of the 100 in 13.34, while teammate Sam DeGraff was third in her heat of the triple jump at 33-6.75.
