Fulton’s Zach Ryder recorded two pins and teammate Brian Zahnle won his quarterfinals match Friday night as both advanced to today’s semifinals at the Illinois Class 1A Oregon Sectional wrestling meet.
Ryder, ranked sixth in the state by Illinoismatmen.com, will face fifth-rated Quincy Kalkbrenner of Lena-Winslow in this morning’s semifinals at 140 pounds. Ryder pinned Bryce Willett of Monmouth-Roseville in 2:51 and Travis Heck of Harvard in 3:50 to move on. Zahnle, who received a first-round bye as a regional tournament champion at 125, beat Trae Walters of Kewanee 3-1. Zahnle will face Orion’s Zach Butler, ranked 12th in the Illinoismatmen.com Class 1A ratings, in today’s semifinals.
Morrison’s Mitch Hood, Mark McDonnell, Phillip O’Shea and Matt McDonnell all advanced to the semifinals. All entered the meet as regional champions.
Hood, ranked third in 1A at 119, recorded a technical fall against Dan Allen of Rockford Lutheran to advance to today’s semifinals, where he will take on top-ranked Nick Harrison of Stillman Valley. Mark McDonnell, ranked second at 140, pinned Aaron Bonnell of Byron and will face 10th-rated Talon Paul of Stillman Valley in the semifinals. O’Shea beat Schuyler Wardlow of Sherrard 11-6 at 152 and will face fifth-rated Nathan Cowan of Harvard in the semifinals. Matt McDonnell, ranked second, beat Byron Morgan of Polo 6-4 and will take on fourth-ranked Seth Whan of Sherrard in the semifinals.
Erie/Prophetstown’s Mitch Mallary, ranked seventh in the state at 112, moved into today’s semifinals with a pair of wins. He beat fifth-ranked Brady Schlueter of Dakota 3-0 in the quarterfinals and will face No. 2 Miah Shearer of Stillman Valley in the semifinals.
The Panthers’ Jakob Jepsen and Ross Hughes also won in the quarterfinals. Jepson, No. 10 at 145, will face No. 4 Tad Hawley of Stillman Valley in the semifinals, while Hughes will go up against top-rated Michael Sojka of Winnebago after pinning Amboy’s Darious Deckler in 36 seconds.
Fulton’s Mitch Butt (215); Erie/Prophetstown’s Brandon McCullough (103) and Dylan Deshane (160); and West Carroll’s Payton Nevills (119) and Earnest Walls (130) won their first-round matches but were knocked into the wrestlebacks after losing in the quarterfinals.
Fulton’s Alex Gehn (112); Erie/Prophetstown’s Jeff Dornbush (135), Nick Stoddard (152) and Johnathon Butts (189); and Morrison’s Sterlin Parks (145) and Calvin Harridge (171) lost first-round matches and dropped to the wrestlebacks.
