AMBOY, Ill. — Any hopes Fulton had of knocking off state-ranked Amboy ended very early Friday night as the Clippers took advantage of early turnovers en route to a 48-3 win over the Steamers in Big Rivers Conference play.

Amboy (5-0) grabbed the momentum early on after the Clippers intercepted a Tyler Renkes pass on the second offensive play of the game. The interception was the first of three turnovers for Fulton (2-3) on the night.

Amboy’s offense then capitalized early when Cody Richardson trounced into the end zone from the 3-yard line with 9:48 left in the first quarter. The extra point made it 7-0 Clippers.

“The turnover on the second play hurt us,” said Fulton coach Pat Lower. “Everything just kind of snowballed after that.”

Amboy continued to take advantage of the early inability of the Fulton offense. Working with good field position for most of the opening period, Clippers’ quarterback Steven Apple raced in for a 9-yard scoring run and Richardson rumbled in for a 4-yard touchdown. Fulton found itself in a 20-0 hole after one quarter.

The Steamers found the scoreboard for the only time during the night in the second quarter. After a Fulton drive stalled at the Amboy 8-yard line, Travis St. Ores booted a 25-yard field goal, shaving the lead to 20-3 at the 11:02 mark of the second period.

However, Amboy took complete control of the contest after Brian Appleman scampered 43 yards into the end zone just minutes later. Apple then tacked on another scoring run.

At the half the Steamers trailed 34-3.

The Clippers went up 48-3 after long scoring runs by Richardson and Appleman in the third quarter.

Fulton will try to rebound next week against Bureau Valley for homecoming.
