Prince of Peace scored the first 28 points Thursday night and rolled over Rivermont Collegiate 61-17 in a first-round game of the Iowa Class 1A Region 4 girls basketball tournament at Central Catholic Auditorium.

The Irish (17-5) led 20-0 after five minutes and cruised the rest of the way over their winless opponent.

Katie Isenhour scored 12 points to lead Prince of Peace, while Ari Aquilani added 10.

East Central rolls

MILES — Keri Cassaday buried four 3-point baskets in the first half and finished with 17 points Thursday to lead East Central past Andrew 57-30 in a first-round game of the Iowa Class 1A Region 4 tournament.

East Central, ranked 13th in the state in Class 1A, never trailed, although it started slowly. The Raiders scored the first four points but led just 4-2 after four minutes.

Tessa Daniels and Cassie Aldis scored 14 points apiece for the Raiders, who improved their record to 17-4.

Emily Ernst paced Andrew (5-16) with nine points.

Preston opens with win

WHEATLAND — Preston earned a first-round victory in the Iowa Class 1A Region 4 tournament, beating Calamus-Wheatland 46-19 on Thursday night.

Marquette advances

BELLEVUE — Marquette Catholic (12-6) earned a shot against East Central in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Region 4 tournament with a 63-24 win against Midland on Thursday.

Sabers win rematch

DEWITT — Central DeWitt couldn’t prevent Mount Vernon from winning the WaMaC Conference East Division title, but it did get a little revenge with a 40-32 victory against the Mustangs in a battle of top-10 teams in Class 3A on Thursday night.

Second-ranked Mount Vernon (19-2) beat the Sabers 38-37 on Jan. 4 in Mount Vernon, and its only previous loss had come against Marion Linn-Mar, the second-ranked team in Class 4A.

The Sabers’ chances of winning the conference took a hit last month with another one-point loss, to Solon. Central DeWitt (18-2) is ranked sixth in 3A.
