MILES — The Prince of Peace boys basketball team had little trouble winning its first game in Class 1A district play Monday, posting a 58-31 decision over Rivermont Collegiate at East Central.

The Irish (8-14) had balanced scoring with three players in double figures, paced by Luke Roling with 14 points, Zach Schmitz with 11 and Bob Goldbeck with 10.

Ben Carr and Ben Lehmkuhl added eight apiece.

The first quarter started out with the Lions (4-8) hitting their first two field goals — one each by Alex Larson (team-high 11 points) and Shravan Chitalapani — to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Irish answered back with a 13-3 run that put them on top by six points at the end of the first period at 13-7.

Roling sparked the drive with four field goals, while Goldbeck hit a trey and Lehmkuhl another basket.

In the second quarter, the Irish pressure defense held the Lions to just two field goals and two free throws as the winners increased their margin to 29-13 by halftime.

The second half saw the Irish put the game in the win column as they outscored the Lions 29-18.

The Irish benefited from solid free throw shooting the entire game, missing just once in the first half and twice in the second for a combined 15-of-18 performance.

“Our guys played hard the entire game,” said Irish coach Gerry Murphy. “I thought all our kids gave it a good effort, especially on defense. It’s tournament time, so you have to get after it the whole game. Our kids did that tonight.”

Prince of Peace advances to a district quarterfinal matchup against second-ranked and unbeaten Bellevue Marquette Wednesday at Miles. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The contest will be followed by East Central/Andrew at approximately 8.
