PEORIA, Ill. — The Clinton LumberKings dropped the first two games of their four-game series at the Peoria Chiefs Saturday, falling by scores of 4-1 Saturday and 11-2 Sunday.

Saturday, Clinton struck first, scoring in the top of the fourth. With two outs Ben Crabtree drew a walk. Crabtree went to second on a wild pitch.

John Whittleman, who had three of the L-Kings’ four hits, then singled to left fielder Jesus Valdez. Crabtree was able to score on the play as Valdez’s throw to the plate was missed by catcher Mark Reed for an error.

Peoria pulled even with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Reed doubled to start the inning. With one out Ryan Norwood singled and Reed moved to third. Yusuf Carter then lofted a sacrifice fly that plated Reed.

L-Kings starting pitcher Kyle Rogers worked seven strong innings, but got a no decision. He allowed just one run on four hits, did not issue a walk and struck out three.

Gerry Oakes relieved Rogers in the eighth. Oakes (0-2) recorded just one out, allowing three runs on three walks and a hit batsman.

Matthew Ciamarella drew a leadoff walk and stole second. With one out Robinson Chirinos and Reed drew two more walks to load the bases before Oakes hit Valdez to force in a run.

Oakes was then replaced by Julian Cordero. Norwood greeted Cordero with a two-run single.

Chiefs starting pitcher Donald Veal allowed Clinton’s unearned run on just two hits over six innings, walking two and striking out eight. Reliever Justin Rayborn (3-1) got the win with two shutout innings while Ed Campusano got his 19th save by working a scoreless ninth.

Sunday, Peoria piled up 13 hits as it rolled to victory.

The Chiefs built a 5-0 lead with a run in the first, a three-run burst in the third and another run in the fourth.

Norwood singled in the first-inning run, but Peoria got just one run out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation. In the third inning Alberto Garcia had an RBI single while Brandon Taylor had a two-run double. Valdez made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the fourth.

Clinton got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Whittleman started the inning by reaching on an error. Joe Kemp’s double to center moved Whittleman around to third before Brian Valichka’s RBI single.

Peoria went up 7-1 on Jake Muyco’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

The Chiefs tacked on four more runs in the eighth to go up 11-1. Norwood and Carter belted back-to-back home runs in the inning. Norwood’s was a three-run blast.

Valichka cracked a solo homer in the ninth.

Zach Phillips (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings.

Scott Taylor (3-2) was the winner, allowing an unearned run on five hits and a pair of hits over seven innings.

The teams meet in Game 3 of the series tonight at 7 p.m.

The series then concludes with a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday.

Clinton has an off day on Wednesday and then opens a four-game home set with Burlington.

The series, which is Clinton’s last one of the season’s first half, opens with a 7 p.m. game Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field.

The teams meet at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, as well, before closing the set with a 2 p.m. game Sunday.
