PEORIA, Ill. — The Clinton LumberKings are playoff-bound.

The LumberKings secured a spot in Midwest League postseason play Friday night as they posted an 8-7, 11-inning victory at Peoria.

The LumberKings actually clinched the berth earlier in the night when Cedar Rapids lost to Wisconsin, meaning Clinton would finish no worse than second in the Midwest League’s Western Division first-half standings.

Friday’s game was tied 6-all at the end of regulation.

After a scoreless 10th inning, Clinton put up two runs in the 11th.

K.C. Herren began the outburst when he doubled to the gap.

Mauro Gomez followed with a grounder to the shortstop, but a throw in an attempt to get Herren at third was off the mark to put runners on the corners.

Herren then scored on a wild pitch that sent Gomez to second.

Gomez later scored on Jay Heafner’s single, making it 8-6.

The Chiefs made things interesting in the bottom of the 11th, scoring a run on Josh Lansford’s two-out single that plated Jonathan Mota.

Jose Marte, the winning pitcher in relief, then struck out Russ Canzler to secure the victory.

Clinton broke out to a 4-0 lead, scoring twice in the second inning and twice again in the third.

In the second, K.C. Herren’s triple plated Chad Tracy, who had reached on an error. Herren later scored on a groundout.

In the third, Marcus Lemon walked, moved to second on a passed ball, went to third on a single by Jose Vallejo and scored on John Whittleman’s single to right.

Vallejo later scored on a forceout.

Peoria raced back, though, scoring three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth for a 5-4 lead.

The LumberKings got the lead back with two runs in the fifth.

Whittleman led off with a single, went to second on an error and scored on Tracy’s double to right.

Tracy eventually scored on a single to center by Heafner.

Peoria came back to tie the game at 6-all with a run in the seventh.

The teams conclude the first half of the season this weekend with a 6:30 p.m. game tonight and 2 p.m. contest Sunday.
