GENEVA, Ill. — The Clinton LumberKings earned a pair of wins in the first two games of a four-game series at Kane County Saturday and Sunday, winning 7-6 in 11 innings Saturday before taking a 5-2 decision Sunday.

K.C. Herren’s RBI single in the 11th inning, his fifth hit of the game, lifted Clinton to victory Saturday.

The L-Kings had to fight back from a 3-0 deficit as Kane County scored three times in the first inning. Clinton scored the next six runs, scoring once in the second, twice in both the fourth and fifth and once more in the sixth to go up 6-3.

In the top of the second Herren cracked a one-out triple and scored on a groundout by Mauro Gomez. Herren started things again the fourth, bunting for a hit. Gomez followed with a two-run homer to left.

In the L-Kings’ fifth John Whittleman reached on a one-out error before Chad Tracy belted a two-run homer. Kevin Gossage reached on an error to start the top of the sixth. With two outs Jose Vallejo walked. After a pitching change Whittleman singled to center, plating Gossage.

Kane County shaved the margin to one at 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars pulled even in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings when Jermaine Mitchell homered with one out off reliever John Slusarz.

Marcus Lemon started the top of the 11th with a single to left. Vallejo sacrificed him to second. Whittleman was intentionally walked and Tracy followed with another walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Herren’s game-winning hit.

L-Kings reliever Tim Gudex came on to work a perfect bottom of the 11th for his third save. Slusarz (1-2) got the win, allowing a run in his 2 1/3 innings.

Clinton starting pitcher Zach Phillips allowed five runs, four earned, in 6 1/3 innings. He was relieved by Brennan Garr in the seventh. Garr worked a scoreless inning and a third.

Sunday, Broc Coffman improved to 5-0 and Gomez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the LumberKings.

Coffman worked seven strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Clinton built a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth inning and another tally in the fifth.

Gomez led off the top of the fourth with a double to left. Jay Heafner drew a walk before Gossage moved the runners to second and third with a bunt. With two outs Lemon stroked a two-run double to right.

Tracy singled to center to start the L-Kings’ fifth. Herren reached on a fielder’s choice as Tracy was forced out. Gomez followed with an RBI double to center.

Kane County scored once in the sixth. Clinton went up 5-1 with a run in the seventh and another in the ninth.

Herren led off the top of the seventh with a single to right. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Gomez.

Whittleman drew a leadoff walk in the ninth. With two outs Gomez singled to left and Whittleman moved around to third. Heafner then singled in Whittleman.
