A leadoff home run by Nick Franklin was just the beginning as the Clinton LumberKings hammered a season-high six homers in an 11-2 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Midwest League baseball Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Franklin added a two-run shot in the eighth, finishing 3-for-5 to lead the attack.
Mario Martinez lifted a solo shot to right-center off Hot Rods’ ace right-hander Alexander Colome in the second inning, putting Clinton ahead 2-0. Back-to-back blasts by Brandon Bantz and Hawkins Gebbers extended the lead to 6-0 and chased Colome from the game after four innings.
Colome (4-4) had allowed just three home runs over 56 2/3 innings and had a team-best 1.91 ERA before the Kings got to him for six runs on six hits.
Meanwhile, left-hander Jon Hesketh found the electric stuff that had eluded him over the past four games. Hesketh (3-4) gave up just a run on two hits and struck out six over six innings, securing his first win since April 27 at Quad Cities.
James Jones added a laser of a home run to right-center in the fifth, his second in as many days and sixth of the season, to make it 8-0.
Franklin put the icing on the cake with his second drive, this time to the Clinton bullpen in right. His 11th of the year made it 11-1.
