CLINTON — Fridays and exciting wins seem to go hand-in-hand for the Clinton LumberKings.

After winning an 11-inning thriller over Beloit last Friday, the LumberKings scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth last night to rally past Burlington for a 6-5 win before a large crowd at Alliant Energy Field.

Matt Smith provided the game-winner in the Midwest League contest with his two-run double.

The LumberKings took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jose Vallejo hit a towering solo home run over the left-field fence.

That lead didn’t last very long as the Bees came back strong, scoring one run on three hits in the second, another run in the third and two more in the fourth to go on top 4-1.

The LumberKings had several chances in the fourth and fifth innings and cut the margin to 4-3.

The Bees added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 5-3 game heading into the ninth inning.

The LumberKings got their bats going in the bottom of the inning, coming up with three runs on four hits to put the game in the win column.

Terry Blunt led off with a double to deep right field.

After a fly out by K.C. Herren for the first out of the inning, Ben Crabtree came on to pinch hit for Joe Kemp and came up with an RBI double to score Blunt and make it 5-4.

Brian Valichka hit a sharp infield grounder to the third baseman, who tagged out Crabtreee for the second out as Valichka made it to first.

Vallejo then came up with his second hit of the game, a single to put runners at first and second.

Smith followed with his third hit of the game, a double to right field that plated both runs and completed the come-from-behind victory.

The LumberKings used four pitchers starting with Kyle Rogers, followed by Kevin Altman, Josh Giles and J.B. Diaz.

The series concludes this weekend with a 7 p.m. game tonight and 2 p.m. contest Sunday.

All Midwest League teams take Monday off before the All-Star Game Tuesday at Davenport’s John O’Donnell Stadium.

After another off day Wednesday, the LumberKings open the second half of their season Thursday when Southwest Michigan comes to town for a four-game series.
