CLINTON — Left-hander Zach Phillips and a pair of relievers combined on a four-hit shutout and the Clinton LumberKings scored the game’s only run on a double play in a 1-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Alliant Energy Field Thursday night.

Phillips (2-3) worked seven masterful innings for the win, allowing just three hits and striking out nine while walking just two. Phillips got help from relievers Josh Giles and Jose Marte. Giles worked the eighth and Marte the ninth.

Clinton, which snapped a five-game losing streak, scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the third inning. Joseph Kemp led off the inning with a single to center.

No. 9 hitter Jose Vallejo followed with another single to center, with Kemp racing around to third. Truan Mehl then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, with Kemp scoring what would be the game’s only run.

Cedar Rapids’ Robert Mosebach (3-4) was the tough-luck loser, scattering six hits in his complete-game effort. He walked one and struck out two.

The game took just 2 hours and 7 minutes to complete. There were five double plays, three by the Kernels’ defense and two by the L-Kings.

Clinton got hits from six different players, with Mehl, Matt Smith and Freddie Thon also getting singles, while K.C. Herren had a double.

Flint Wipke had two of Cedar Rapids’ four hits, including its only extra-base hit with a double. Brad Coon and Stantrel Smith also had hits for the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids’ best scoring chance came in the second inning when it loaded the bases with nobody out.

Wipke doubled to start the inning. Brett Martinez was then hit by a pitch and Stantrel Smith put down a bunt. A fielding error by Vallejo allowed all the runners to advance safely, loading the bases.

Tyler Johnson then grounded to L-Kings third baseman John Whittleman, who threw to catcher Brian Valichka for a forceout. Phillips then struck out Marco Albano and got Coon to fly out to end the threat.

Clinton now hits the road for a four-game series at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, beginning tonight at 7:05. The pitching matchup will feature L-Kings right-hander Jake Rasner (3-4) and Wisconsin lefty Justin Thomas (4-5).
