Marquette Catholic dropped only one game Saturday as the Mohawks won the Preston tournament in their first volleyball action of the season.

Marquette (4-0) squeaked by Edgewood-Colesburg 21-19, 14-21, 16-14 in one match of the round-robin tournament.

Danielle Bender led Marquette with six kills against Edgewood-Colesburg, while Jacquel Frett and Blake Banowetz added five and four, respectively.

The Mohawks, ranked sixth in Class 1A, also got a tough match from the host Trojans, winning 21-17, 21-19.

Kelsey Tebbe dished out 60 assists in the four games and the Mohawks had five hitters with 10 or more kills.

Edgewood-Colesburg, No. 15 in Class 2A, won its other three matches, including a 21-13, 19-21, 15-13 win over Preston.

The Trojans, No. 14 in Class 1A, beat Northeast in three games and topped Bellevue.

Northeast also took Edgewood-Colesburg to three games. But the Rebels’ only win came over Bellevue.

The Rebels played Preston and Marquette early in the day, and coach Brenda McKone said Northeast got off to a very slow start in its first day of competition.

“I was disappointed in how we came out in our first two matches,” she said. “But once we got going, I saw the team that I’ve been seeing in practice. Our communication was much improved and we started running plays that we weren’t earlier.”

McKone said she felt good about the way her team played against Edgewood-Colesburg.

“We played really well,” she said. “I think we’ll be competitive all the way through.”

Addie Oberman led the Rebels with 14 kills and also had 19 assists in a role similar to the one Carlie Dever had last year for Northeast. Dever led the Rebels in kills and assists last year. Oberman didn’t set or play in the back row last season.

“Addie is a really good athlete,” McKone said. “She’s stepping right up and filling Carlie’s shoes.”
