Matt Wilkens hit a 3-point basket as the third quarter expired to break a tie game, then Morrison reeled off the first nine points of the fourth quarter and defeated Fulton 56-44 on Friday in Three Rivers Conference boys basketball.

Fulton’s Erik Renkes scored with 3 seconds left in the third quarter to knot the score at 37, but Wilkens answered with his 3-pointer at the other end that swung the momentum in Morrison’s direction. Wilkens, who led the Mustangs with 15 points, even finished the opening 9-0 run in the fourth quarter with a free throw.

“I don’t fault our kids at all for their effort,” Fulton coach Rick Norman said in a postgame interview on KCLN radio station. “Morrison decided to get very hot against us from the outside. That traditionally is not their style of ball. It’s not that our kids weren’t guarding, they were hitting their shots. I’m sure a couple of them had their game of the year.”

The Mustangs finished with seven 3-point baskets. Wilkens had two, as did Luke Brands (14 points), while nine of Kyle Heusinkveld’s 10 points came from beyond the arc. Bill Bos, Morrison’s 6-foot-5 senior center who is the team’s leading scorer for the season, added 13 points.

“We knew Bos would be a handful inside, and I thought we did a good job on him,” Norman said. “The kids stood up on the 3-point line and drained them.”

Trae Tiesman led Fulton with 17 points, while Renkes added 11.
