BELLEVUE — Northeast’s overall strength was a key Tuesday as it claimed first place at the 12-team Girls Comet Relays in high school track and field.

The Rebels won four events, two of them relays, as they totaled 90 points. They also got individual wins from Sammi Farrell in the 800 meters and Shawna Spain in the 100 hurdles. Spain’s win came in a tremendously close race. Her time of 17.60 seconds was .04 better than runner-up Sina Stepken of Prince of Peace, with Chelsea Kozelka of Bellevue just another .01 back and fourth-place finisher Mallory McLaughlin of Northeast finishing in 17.75. First and sixth place were separated by just 35-hundredths of a second.

Prince of Peace edged Bellevue for second place 77-72, setting two meet records along the way.

Audrey Griffin broke the record in the 3,000, and she had to push herself as she won the race by a minute. Her winning time was 11 minutes, 42.27 seconds. Griffin also won the 1,500 in a closer race. Her time of 5:07.52, 4 seconds faster than Bellevue’s Katie Flogel.

Sina Stepken broke the other record for the Irish. She got it in winning the 400 hurdles in 1:07.79. Prince of Peace also won the 1,600 relay.

Preston’s Tiffany Bormann broke the meet record in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches.

Camanche finished fourth in the team race. Sarah Powell (discus), McKenzie McDaniel (100) and Courtney Harksen (200) were champions for the Indians.

Cardinals 12th, Sabers 14th at WaMaC Supermeet

DEWITT — Sophie Seyffert placed third in the long jump and fourth in the 100, while Laura Osterhaus took fourth in the high jump and Maquoketa placed fourth in the 400-meter relay to lead the Cardinals to a 12th-place finish Monday at the WaMaC Conference Supermeet.

Central DeWitt placed 14th, led by Lindsay Smith’s fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles.

Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the team title with 135 points.

River Queens nab 2 1sts, 5 2nds at junior varsity meet

ELDRIDGE — Sarah Schimerowski won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.10, and Kim Holesinger, Sara Prins, Ashley Horst and Missy Kremer won the 400 relay to lead Clinton on Monday at the North Scott junior varsity meet.

The River Queens also got seconds from Libby Hess (shot put), Courtney Camp (high jump), Kremer (400), Schimerowski (100 hurdles) and Holesinger (200).
