GOOSE LAKE — The Northeast Rebels proved why they are ranked seventh in Class 1A Iowa High School State football polls as they took a 35-0 decision from the Preston-East Central Spartans while celebrating their homecoming with a victory and improved their record to 5-0.

Jake Dever, a senior Rebel running back had another big night scoring two touchdowns and picked up 142 yards on 21 carries while Matt Clark added 55 yards on 10 attempts.

The Rebels had 125 yards passing and a total of 317 while holding the Spartans to just 80 yards total.

The Rebels won the toss and took the opening kickoff on their own 38 yard line and picked up three first downs when they lost the ball on a fumble that was recovered by Derrick Driscoll of the Spartans on the 25 yard line and Josh Feddersen, quarterback picked up a couple of first downs but then was sacked by Dan Heiar and were forced to punt.

The Rebels got the ball back on their 36 and again came up with three first downs with a couple of good runs by Matt Clark to move down near the end zone where Dever punched in from the one for the first TD of the game and the extra point kick was good by Ivan Sandoval to make it 7-0 with 1:41 showing on the clock.

The Spartans took the kickoff on their own 30 yard line and once again they had to punt away on three downs.

The Rebels moved the ball on a couple of running plays and a pass to Ace Diedrich and were down to the 25 yard line as the first quarter came to an end.

The Rebels scored again shortly after the second quarter started when Jordan Howe ran in from the 4-yard line and the kick was good to make it 14-0 with 9:33 left in the period.

The Spartans got the kickoff and Kyle Feller returned the ball out to the 44. On the next play Mike Lorenzen intercepted a pass and went 47 yards for a score and the kick was good to put the Rebels on top 21-0 with 7:02 left in the first half.

The third quarter turned out to be a real defensive game by both teams and each had the ball three times and were forced to punt each time. Lucas Rorah had a sack and Diedrich with a pass interception. The quarter ended with the Rebels still on top 21-0.

In the fourth quarter the Rebels scored their fourth TD on a 53-yard pass play from Howe to Lorenzen and again the kick was good to go top 28-0 with 11:47 on the clock.

Diedrich intercepted his second pass of the game and returned it to the Spartans 28-yard line where Dever ran it in for his second TD and again Sandoval was perfect for the night with his fifth extra point to make it 35-0 with just over nine minutes left in the game and then the clock continued to run.

“We have a very solid team and it’s homecoming week and we knew that it was going to be a tough game as it usually is with Preston /East Central. I thought we came out really great in the first quarter and overall it was a good defensive game,” said Northeast coach Jeremy Mosier.

The Rebels will be on the road next Friday as they travel to North Linn.

East Central record is now (0-4 conference and 1-4 overall) and they will host Edgewood-Colesburg for their homecoming game next Friday.

“We are coming a lot closer as a team, as our kids finally believe in themselves and our system. They are starting to learn to play hard and how to compete especially on defense as they have shown much improvement every game,” said Spartan coach Chet Knake.

The Northeast frosh soph game was won by the Rebels 39-0.
