WYOMING — Prince of Peace began its quest to make a return trip to the Iowa Class 1A boys golf state tournament in fine fashion Friday, putting four players in the top eight and winning the Midland Sectional title by 20 strokes.

The Irish shot 324 to advance to next Friday’s district meet at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City. Bellevue also moved on with a second-place finish. The Comets shot 344 and were 24 strokes ahead of third-place Preston. Lucas Assenmacher of Preston did advance individually. He placed third in the medalist race with a 79. Matt Ploessel (80) and Tyrel Schroeder (82) led Bellevue, finishing fourth and fifth.

Eric Sikkema led Prince of Peace and finished second overall in the individual race. He shot a 77 on the par-72 Little Bear Golf Course, three strokes behind medalist Goeff Damann of host Midland.

“Probably the biggest key for Eric was he had probably only one bad tee shot all day, and that was early and led to a double bogey,” Prince of Peace coach Chris Vens said. “He birdied No. 6 both times (as holes Nos. 6 and 15 on the nine-hole layout).”

The key for the Irish was posting four of the lowest eight scores. Joe Vens and John Nelson each came in with 82s, and James Nelson had an 83.

“That’s what took us through all of last year,” coach Vens said of having four players shoot low scores. “The scores were really good.”

The conditions certainly didn’t help.

“We played about a hole and a half in light rain and then had to pull the kids off the course and had about a 45-minute delay,” Vens said. “They played in a light drizzle for a bit, and then it cleared off a little and was just overcast.”

Friday’s rain forced the postponement of the other two sectionals involving area teams. The Class 2A meet at Durant was rescheduled for Monday, and the 3A tournament at Springbrook in DeWitt was moved back to Tuesday.
