CLINTON — The Clinton High softball team opened Mississippi Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader setback at Muscatine Thursday.

The Muskies won the opener 12-0 in three innings, scoring eight runs in the first inning and four more in the second.

Clinton’s lone hit was a single by Lindsey Thornton.

Muscatine scored six runs in the first two innings of the second game before the River Queens shut them down over the next five frames as the Muskies won 7-0.

Bailee Stauffer had Clinton’s hit.

“The first game we put the ball in play, but Muscatine got ahead so far that it was done in three innings,” said Clinton coach Renee Shovlain. “In the second game I was happy with how we played the final five innings. The defense relaxed a bit and started making plays. I was a little disappointed with our hitting, though. We struck out looking way too many times.”

Clinton hosts its own tournament Saturday. The River Queens meet Davenport Central at 10 a.m., Central plays Camanche at noon and Clinton faces Camanche at 2 p.m.
