CEDAR RAPIDS — Clinton High School’s doubles team of Elliott Deering and Josh Lawrence took fifth place at the Iowa Class 2A boys state singles and doubles tennis tournament Saturday.

Deering, and Lawrence, who were seeded second in the 16-team field, won their opener 6-2, 7-5, besting a team from Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Deering and Lawrence then lost their second-round match, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Bettendorf’s Adam and David DeSimone who went on to win the title.

In the consolation bracket Deering and Lawrence downed a team from Ames 6-1, 6-2, then topped a team from West Des Moines Valley 6-3, 6-3 before claiming fifth place with another win over Jefferson’s Sean Ferrall and Jake Martin, winning by scores of 7-5, 6-3.

Clinton’s Jan-Phillip Wecker took eighth place in singles.

Wecker opened with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to No. 1 seed and eventual state champ Charlie Caris of Des Moines Roosevelt.

In the consolation bracket Wecker topped Cliff Chang of Ames 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and Chris Xin of Ames 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 5-0 (retire) before falling to Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jeff Damisch 6-4, 6-0.

In the seventh-place match Wecker dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision to No. 4 seed Alex Pomerantz of West Des Moines Valley.

The River Kings also had another doubles entry in the state field in Stephen McEleney and Drew Lakin.

McEleney and Lakin lost their opener 6-2, 6-2 to the No. 4 seeds from Cedar Rapids Kennedy. McEleney and Lakin were then eliminated with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to a team from Ames in the first round of consolation play.
