CLINTON — Libby Hess and Laura Callan did not want to waste an opportunity to defend Judd Pool on Saturday.

After finishing fourth three times earlier in the River Queen Invitational, Hess did not want to finish anywhere but first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Callan had swum at the junior-varsity level but was gunning for a win in the varsity diving competition.

Both seniors came through, putting together event victories and leading the River Queens to a 35-point performance in the five-team meet.

Clinton finished fourth in the meet, 15 points ahead of Davenport North.

“Without seeing the splits, I'd guess probably 70 percent of our swimmers swam lifetime bests,” Clinton coach June Wilden said. “That speaks for itself, that the kids are working hard. We're walking out with quite a few medals. Almost every kid's going to get one.”

Hess lost earlier in the day to Rock Island freshman Kelly Bishop in the 100 butterfly and did not want to lose to a freshman again in her signature event, the 100 breaststroke.

Hess fired out of the block. Her turn at 50 yards separated her from Davenport Central freshman Emma Shie, Davenport West senior Paige Wolfe and Bishop.

“It's something that I've had to work at,” Hess said of her turns. “My first 50 is the strongest, so I knew that on the second 50 I'd have to take it out. I had to make turns to my advantage. I had more of an advantage (swimming at home), there's more home crowd. I had something to prove in my home pool and I'm glad I did that.”

Callan didn't expect to defeat Davenport North's Marguerite DelVecchio in diving, but she nailed her inward pike during the 11-dive competition to edge DelVecchio for first place in the event.

“This year, I added so many new dives,” Callan said. “(The inward pike), that was my favorite. I thought I did really good.”

Clinton's junior varsity 200-yard medley relay took first. Freshman Hope Creeley, who led off the medley relay, also won the JV 100 backstroke.

The River Queens' JV team took third out of five teams, scoring 56 points.
