CLINTON — Ellen Russell saved her best for last.

Playing for seventh place in singles at the Iowa Girls Class 2A State Tennis Tournament, Russell used a strong performance in the second and third sets to defeat Waterloo West’s Mirela Bacevac at Max Lynn Courts.

“This is the best I’ve played the whole tournament,” said Russell after the 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. “The first set I really didn’t know what to expect. But by the second set I began picking up on her weaknesses like the backhand.”

Russell, who played three matches — including two marathon-type ones — on Thursday, admitted she was tired entering Friday’s competition.

She opened Friday with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Frances Xin of Ames.

“I was pretty sore when I began playing today,” said Russell. “My thighs hurt pretty bad and my shoulders were sunburned.”

Russell responded admirably against Bacevac.

After splitting sets, Russell built a 4-1 lead in the third set.

Bacevac rallied with three straight wins to tie the set before Russell rebounded by winning the next two games.

“I had hoped to place in the top six, so I finished just one spot out of doing that,” said Russell. “But I also finished with a win, which is a positive. That should help my confidence for the future.”

“I was really pleased how Ellen played in her seventh-place match,” added Clinton coach Cindy Rasche. “She played a good mental game and seemed to grow as a player. That was great to see.”

The top seeds in both singles and doubles won titles Friday. Bettendorf’s Chrissie McGaffigan was the singles champ, while Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader were the doubles winners.
